Political Advocacy FAQ

Political Advocacy and Voting Reminders

What is MPS policy on political advertising?

MPS Administrative Policy 9.08, Advertising in the Schools, states: "(2) Political advertising/advocacy shall not occur in school buildings or upon school premises during work hours in the presence of students or if the communication threatens to disrupt the work or educational environment or interferes with employees' duties. (This does not apply to bumper stickers of reasonable size on automobiles parked in school parking lots, unless the display disrupts the work or educational environment.) Any such advertising/advocacy shall comply with state and federal election laws."

Does the policy mean employees can't wear a candidate button to school?

If a political button will be seen by students, you may not wear it. However, if there are no students at a school, for example on a banking day, you may wear a political button.

How about displaying a political poster in your classroom?

If the poster can be seen by students, Board policy prohibits posting it in a school or on school premises.

How about stickers, posters, PA announcements, and other public ways of reminding adults to vote on Election Day?

Public messages on the civic duty to vote are appropriate for schools - for staff, parents, visitors, and students. Of course, all such communications must be made without advocating for candidates.
