Are you allowed to distribute materials and talk with parents, urging them to attend the October 21 School Board budget hearing?
Yes! Parents should be informed that your school may face more cuts unless the Board stands up for our children at its October 21 meeting. Parents should attend and speak in support of their child's school.
Schools can send flyers home with students, display posters in the building, and communicate with parents when they come to school for conference days, open house, and other activities. We recommend that the BR and MTEA Building Committee work with the principal to inform and involve parents, especially School Governance Councils.

What about advocating for the MTEA's October 22 Public Forum on Funding Great Schools?
Schools can and should promote the October 22 event along with the October 21 hearing. The forum will be held at the MPS central office and parents are welcome to attend. The forum will help parents understand how the current laws force the School Board to either raise property taxes or cut educational opportunities for their children, year after year.

Does the district's policy banning political advertising in schools apply to promoting parent attendance at School Board meetings?
Absolutely not! Principals and staffs have mobilized parents and community members to attend board meetings for decades. And parents often bring their children to speak in support of funding for their school, keeping their school open, and other issues.
