Dental Insurance Benefits

Answers to your frequently asked questions.

What are my dental insurance options?

You may enroll in either the Anthem (Blue Cross/Blue Shield) plan or the Care-Plus (Dental Associates) plan.

What are the benefits of each plan?

The comparison chart lists the coverages for a wide variety of dental services.

What are the overall diferences in the plans?

Anthem -Blue Cross/Blue Shield  is a traditional plan, allowing you to go to the dentist of your choice. However, you pay at least 20% of the charges for most dental services.

The CarePlus plan operates like an HMO. There are no out-of-pocket costs to you on many services. However, you are limited to treatment by Care-Plus dentists only.

Is there a way to avoid excessive out-of-pocket costs with the Anthem plan?

Yes. Many dentists have agreed to charge patients only the usual, customary and reasonable (UCR) rates set by Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. For a listing of these dentists, go to the Online Provider Directory at the Blue Cross Blue Shield Web site and Search by Location

Do I have to pay a share of the premium cost for dental coverage?

Yes.  The MTEA has negotiated School Board payment of most of the premium cost for both plans, but teachers pay the following share of the premium:

  • Anthem:  $0.72/month (single) or $5.92/month (family)
  • Care-Plus: $1.67/month (single) or $5.50/month (family)
  Is dental coverage automatic?

No. You must enroll in the plan of your choice to receive dental coverage. Use the "MPS Application/Change Form" to enroll in both dental and health insurance.

Is there a deadline for enrolling?

Yes. You must enroll within 30 days of employment. If you do not enroll by the deadline, you will not have dental coverage for your first year of MPS employment. (You will be able to enroll in September of next year.)

When will my dental coverage begin?

It depends on how soon your application is received by the MPS Human Resources Department. If you start teaching in late August and get your application in by the end of September, your coverage starts October 1.
