Teacher Committees

Teacher members are invited to join these committees.  

 

Art Educators - Focused on advocacy of arts education during the school day. Plans activities and develops advocacy materials to promote student and teacher art, and develop a more collegial atmosphere among district art teachers. Kris Collett is the MTEA staff liaison. 

 

Balloting - Meets when needed for tasks such as political candidate endorsements, contract ratification, etc. Pat O'Mahar is the MTEA staff liaison.  

 

Bilingual/ESL - Concerned with issues and trends affecting bilingual and ESL educators. Committee members plan workshops for professional growth of bilingual/ESL educators. Sal Gonzalez is the MTEA staff liaison.

 

Collective Bargaining - Gathers information related to contract negotiations; develops membership surveys on bargaining priorities and the school calendar, and tallies responses. Meets throughout the school year as needed to help prepare for negotiations and perform other supportive tasks during the bargaining process. Tom Morgan is the MTEA staff liaison.  

 

Constitution - Drafts amendments, and recommends action to the MTEA Executive Board. Assists members who request help in drafting amendments. Usually meets in February to complete its tasks, in one or two work sessions. Pat O'Mahar is the staff liaison.

 

Early Childhood - Actively involved in the professional development and current issues affecting early childhood educators. Typically plans one or two workshops each year. Stephanie Walters is the MTEA staff liaison.  

 

Freedom of Residency - Develops recommendations for strategies to restore the freedom of residential choice to all MTEA members. Joan Heithoff is the MTEA staff liaison. 

 

Human Relations - Works jointly with the Multicultural Educators Committee to increase membership participation in the MTEA, addressing the concerns of educators by planning workshops and activities. Promotes participation in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Writing Contest and other multicultural projects.Linda Gaston-Mounger is the MTEA staff liaison. 

 

Legislative - Addresses legislative issues affecting MTEA members by recommending positions on legislation; developing workshops, publications and campaigns; and organizing membership involvement within legislative districts. Kris Collett is the MTEA staff liaison.

 

Library Media - Addresses the working conditions and professional growth needs of library media specialists. Kris Collett is the staff liaison. 

 

Membership - Develops membership campaign recommendations and helps to organize events such as the new teacher event. Stephanie Walters is the MTEA staff liaison. 

 

Multicultural Educators - Works jointly with the Human Relations Committee on multicultural education concerns through workshops and other activities. Linda Gaston-Mounger is the MTEA staff liaison.  

 

Music Educators - Meets to provide updated information on music education and staffing and curriculum; works to promote music education in all schools. Don Ernest is the MTEA staff liaison.

 

Physical Education - Actively participates in addressing issues and professional development needs of physical education teachers. 

 

Political Action Steering Committee - Interviews candidates running for local public office; makes recommendations for endorsement; distributes political action contributions and organizes volunteers to support endorsed candidates. Meets as needed during election periods. Linda Gaston-Mounger is the staff liaison.

 

Reading - Provides collegial support and networking for educators involved in teaching reading. Monitors MPS reading programs and professional issues affecting reading instruction. Bob Anderson is the MTEA staff liaison. 

 

Retirement and Insurance - Studies pension legislation, tax deferred annuity programs, insurance programs, and financial planning opportunities. When appropriate, develops recommendations for programs for MTEA members. 

 

School/Family/Community Partnerships - Provides networking, information, and training to help staffs initiate and develop partnerships to enhance student achievement; plans workshops and meetings, including the Annual Milwaukee Conference on School/Family/Community Partnerships. Linda Gaston-Mounger is the MTEA staff liaison. 

 

Special Education - Proactively identifies and addresses the concerns of special education personnel - through surveys, workshops, meetings, etc. Deals with both professional growth and working conditions. Nancy Costello is the MTEA staff liaison.

 

Teacher Education and Professional Standards (TEPS) - Addresses professionalization issues and works to enhance the status of teachers through efforts such as helping educators attain National Board Certification.
