Educational Assistant Committees

Educational Assistant members are invited to join these committees.

 

Balloting - Counts ballots where written ballots are required according to the MEAA Constitution.

 

Budget (Joint) - Prepares and recommends an annual program budget for the MTEA - along with the dues amount to fund the budget.

 

Collective Bargaining - Updates information and statistics related to contract negotiations including pay equity and assist the bargaining team during negotiations as needed.

 

Constitution (Joint) - Drafts amendments, and recommends action by the MEAA Executive Council. Assists members who request help in drafting amendments.  Pat O'Mahar is the MTEA staff liaison.

 

Discipline and Security (Joint) - Monitors actions of MPS impacting security and discipline in the schools. Develops recommendations and workshops for improving security and discipline. Sid Hatch is the MTEA staff liaison.

 

Educational Opportunities - Plans workshops for educational assistants, and works with WEAC to provide professional courses for educational assistants.

 

Freedom of Residency Committee (Joint) - Develop recommendations for a comprehensive strategy - including negotiations, legislation and political action - for restoring the freedom of residency to all MTEA members. Joan Heithoff is the MTEA staff liaison.

 

Human Relations - Works on increasing member involvement in the union. They plan workshops for educational assistants and promote participation in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Writing Contest and other multicultural projects.

 

Legislative (Joint) - Addresses legislative issues affecting MTEA members through activities such as studying and recommending positions on legislation; helping develop campaigns; and organizing membership involvement within legislative districts.  Andy Reid is the MTEA staff liaison.

 

Membership - Develops membership campaign recommendations and helps to organize events, especially for new educational assistants.

 

Nominating Committee - Recruit, interview, and recommend candidates for each elected position as outlined in the MEAA Constitution.  Pat O'Mahar is the MTEA staff liaison.

 

Pension - Plan and implement a workshop for educational assistants on retirement/pension benefits.

 

Political Action Committee (Joint) - Interviews candidates for local public offices to determine endorsement recommendations.  Distributes political action contributions and organizes volunteers to support endorsed candidates.  Andy Reid is the MTEA staff liaison.

 

Revenue Enhancement Committee (Joint) - Identify sources of income for our union, in addition to dues and other traditional sources.

 

SpeakOut! (Joint) - Promotes more balanced coverage of public education in Milwaukee by helping members articulate their experiences and positive stories. Provides members with information, activities, and tools to increase their effectiveness in communicating in public and in the media. Kris Collett is the MTEA staff liaison.

 

Special Interest - Keeps the MTEA aware of the needs and concerns of educational assistants in specific classifications, including ESL/Biligual, Special Education, Technology, Library Assistants and Parent Coordinators.
