Intersessions Changed by MPS
Background
Copies of the three 2011-12 calendars were distributed at the June 8 meeting of Building Representatives, and posted on both the MPS and MTEA websites by June 9. MPS had discussed these calendars with MTEA representatives and indicated the School Board would approve them later in June.
Changed Without Notice
Prior to Board action, the administration changed the dates for the end of the fall intersession and the start of the spring intersession. The remainder of the year-round calendar (and the traditional and IB calendars) remained as discussed.
The district did not notify our union of the changes. In fact, a BR at one of the year-round schools found the discrepancies when she was reviewing the calendar posted on the MPS website on July 5.
The BR notified our union's staff. We subsequently learned that the administrator who should have contacted our union failed to do so.
BRs Checking on Vacation Conflicts
The first calendar posted on MPS and MTEA websites listed Monday, April 2, as the start of the spring intersession. But the Board approved a calendar with Wednesday, April 4 as the start.
Therefore, we're asking the BR in each year-round school to survey members to determine if anyone made airplane, hotel, cruise, or other reservations for any dates from Friday, March 30 (after work), through Tuesday, April 3.
If members made reservations prior to learning that the start of the spring intersession had changed, we also need to know if they will incur a financial penalty - such as unrefundable deposit.
Report by August 24
BRs should report any members with vacation conflicts no later than Wednesday, August 24. Send the information to Nancy Costello of our union's staff.
