OTC Drugs - No Longer Eligible Unless

OTC Drugs - No Longer Eligible Unless

Over-the-counter drugs/medicines are no longer considered expenses eligible for reimbursement from either an FSA or an HRA unless you have a prescription.  IRS changed its rules on eligible expenses effective January 1, 2011.

For details, go to the SHPS website and click on the "Eligible Expense Guide", and "OTC Changes Now in Effect."

Debit Cards Discontinued

On January 1, 2011, MPS eliminated the use of debit cards for direct reimbursement from health care FSA and HRA accounts.  Your card will no longer work for eligible expenses such as a prescription co-pay at Walgreen's.

Reimbursement Form Required

For reimbursement from either your health care FSA or HRA, you need to submit a form to SHPS along with a copy of supporting documentation.

Go to SHPS website and click on "Health Care Reimbursement Claim Form" to print the form and read details on completing the form and sending the necessary documentation.

You may either fax or mail your claim to SHPS.  Either way, send a copy of your documentation; retain the original in your records.

You should receive a reimbursement check in two to three weeks after SHPS receives your claim.

Tip: Pay Doctor Bills After SHPS Pays You

Most doctors bill patients for deductible, co-pay, and coinsurance amounts.  They rarely demand payment up-front.  To delay paying your doctor until you receive the money from your FSA and HRA, we recommend these steps:

  1. Do not pay the doctor bill when you receive it.
  2. As soon as you receive the EOB on the bill from Aetna or UHC, send a copy of it to SHPS along with your reimbursement claim form. (Faxing is the quickest route.)
  3. When you receive the SHPS check, pay your doctor.

Checking Your Account Amount

To find out how much money is available in either your health care FSA or HRA, go to the SHPS website and log in at "Participants/Members."

You may also call 1-888-842-8230, a number dedicated to providing MPS employees with FSA and HRA account data.
