TEAM Program

Teacher Evaluation And Mentoring (TEAM) Program

The Teacher Evaluation and Mentoring (TEAM) program provides positive intervention and evaluation to tenured teachers who show a need for assistance in their classroom performance. TEAM is a collaborative effort between the Milwaukee Public Schools and the Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association. By contract, the district and the union commit time and resources to allow experienced teachers to work with fellow teachers through a peer assistance approach.

Assistance Provided

TEAM participants receive intensive assistance from peers (mentors) for at least two full semesters. Assistance consists of a variety of interventions including planning sessions, observations, follow-up conferences, modeling, coaching, providing resources, meetings with the local administrator, etc. For those exiting successfully, limited follow-up is provided.

Participants who are headed for an unsuccessful exit are provided with career counseling as well as other opportunities. These supports are offered to participants resigning from MPS.

Referrals

Teachers may be referred to the MTEA program by their administrator, a colleague, or they may self-refer. Each school year, there are two referral deadlines (see events calendar for the specific deadlines):

  • Mid-October (to start participating in the second semester)
  • Mid-March (to start participating in the first semester of the next school year.)

TEAM is available to any tenured MPS teacher who is in need of assistance with classroom performance. Participation is strictly voluntary.

Team Program Statistics:  September 1997 – September 2008

A total of 406 referrals from:

  • Principals – 351
  • Peers – 25
  • Self-referrals – 30

There were 341 valid referrals. Referrals are invalid primarily because…

  • The teacher did not have three years of MPS experience, or
  • The principal did not submit the required observation report.

To date, 218 teachers have been offered assistance. The results:

  • 20 – Currently in the program
  • 33 – Refused the offer
  • 59 – Exited successfully
  • 11 – Exited unsuccessfully
  • 10 – Exited for other reasons prior to completing two semesters
  • 85 – Resigned or retired during the program
