Many teachers have more years of MPS service than their salary step shows because they started working before the master's-premised salary schedule was negotiated in 1990-91. At that time, all teachers were placed on an entirely new schedule - regardless of their years of MPS service. In most cases, the step placement in the transition to the new schedule was lower than the teacher's years in MPS.
In addition, since the 1990-91 school year, many teachers have reached the salary schedule maximum. Invariably, their years in MPS far exceed the salary schedule maximum of Step 13 (for the BA and BA+16 divisions) and Step 16 (for the MA, MA+16 and MA+32 divisions).
Some teachers will find that their salary step is higher than their years of MPS service. In these cases, the teachers came to MPS with outside teaching experience. Starting in 1991-92, such teachers were initially placed at a step that credited them with a maximum of up to seven years of prior experience.
